Bollywood music, in very broad terms, is music from Bollywood Hindi-language films based in India. Bollywood - which gets its name from being part Bombay, part Hollywood (from the United States) - has produced some famous hits around the world and like Hollywood, continues to be acclaimed and prolific with its films.
In many Bollywood musical films, the actors sometimes lip-synched their performances to that of professional recording artists but many also gained notoriety for being both actors and singers. In the 1950s,
Kishore Kumar was one such example who was known for his on screen talents as well as his vocal career off screen. Other examples include
Suraiyya and
Noor Jehan.
These days, Bollywood music has become so pertinent to the marketing success of films that soundtracks released on tape and now CD are released well ahead of the film's release in order to generate buzz.
